Lynher Building

  • Location Truro, Cornwall
  • Cost £6m
  • Completion 2006

The Lynher Building was delivered under a single contract with the Fal Building as part of a wider masterplan for the Truro College Campus. The two buildings form a landmark gateway to the campus and establish a new Higher Education centre for Truro College. The buildings were designed to provide purpose built higher education facilities for Sports and Sports Rehabilitation, Computing, Photography and Editing Suites and a Games Designing suite.

The Lynher Building was designed around a large covered courtyard that provides a Multi-Use-Games-Area (MUGA). The roof of the MUGA was created by using an inflatable pillow technique which eliminates the natural glare of the sun while still allowing plenty of natural daylight to the indoor sports facilities.

Externally the project also delivered third generation floodlit synthetic turf pitchs for football and rugby training and games.

The overall BREEAM rating achieved a 'Very Good' through a carefully designed natural ventilation strategy. We worked closely as the designers with local supplier Cornish Concrete Products to develop an innovative insulated pre-cast panel system to enable a significantly reduced construction programme.
