Fal Building

  • Client Truro College
  • Location Truro, Cornwall
  • Cost £10m
  • Completion 2006

The Fal Building is a landmark that marks the entrance to the city of Truro and the Truro College Campus. The building is designed for Higher Education students as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall under the CUC2 initiative.

It was procured as part of a larger contract also containing the Lynher Building, the Red Building and sports pitches which together provide higher education facilities for Sports Rehabilitation, Computing, Photography and Editing Suites and a Games Designing suite.

The plan was designed as a rhomboid to suit the available site and allow sunlight to reach all faces.

The overall BREEAM rating achieved a 'Very Good' through a carefully designed natural ventilation strategy and 'chilled beam' cooling system. The two and four storey atriums at each ends of the buildings have integrated heat recovery systems to reduce the buildings operational energy consumption and carbon.

We worked closely with local supplier Cornish Concrete Products to develop an innovative insulated pre-cast panel system to enable a significantly reduced construction programme.
