Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2014 Shortlist
The shortlist for this year’s Cornwall Sustainability Awards has been announced and Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole Architects are pleased to be one of four finalists in the Sustainable Built Environment category for the Island Hall Project on St Agnes, Isles of Scilly.
Designed by Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole Architects and funded by ERDF, LAG, Extended Schools Partnership and the islanders themselves, the new £2.4million community and workspace hub opened to the public this summer. The Island Hall is a fusion of a restored Bible Christian Chapel and new build workspaces centred around a traditionally constructed larch frame.
“The Island Hall is a real hub for the whole island,” remarked St Agnes resident Nat Legg. “We have a range of spaces within the building allowing a number of different activities to take place at once. This allows a sense of sharing and participation that simply wasn’t possible before.”
The new building has been constructed using Passivhaus principles, a German sustainability standard that combines high levels of insulation and whole-building heat recovery. In addition, all rainwater is harvested and a large integrated solar array occupies the roof.
