Top Award for Lizard Lifeboat Station - 11/06/2012
The South West Building Excellence Award winners for 2012 were announced on Friday at the Imperial Hotel, Torquay.
The award for Best Technical Design went to The Lizard Lifeboat Station, completed last October and officially opened last month. Designed by architects Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole with consulting engineers Royal Haskoning, it accommodates the Tamar Class fast slipway All-weather Lifeboat, "Rose"
The £7million station sits at the foot of the cliffs at Kilcobben Cove, to the east of The Lizard point, billed in the technical press as the UK's most challenging construction site. In fact the contractor, BAM Nuttall, completed the project on time and on budget with construction work largely carried out from the sea using a jack-up barge and materials shipped in from Falmouth.
The Award citation recognises the pivotal role played by the client, the RNLI Shoreworks department, in the design process.
The Awards are organised by Local Authority Building Control throughout the UK. The Lizard Lifeboat Station, as overall winner, now goes forward to the national " Best of the Best" Awards later this year.
